In the west central region of the state of Washington, you’ll find the small community of White Center. With a unique historical background, White Center is an ironically colorful place to live with an interesting past. Thanks to its close proximity to Seattle, White Center is considered to be within the metropolitan area of Seattle. This affords residents of White Center access to many of Seattle’s “big city” amenities, and it also makes White Center a great place to live for those who commute to Seattle each day for work.
White Center is known for its very unique nickname — “Rat City”. Though there are several answers to the question of origin for that nickname, one of the more popular explanations is that “R.A.T.” stands for Reserve Army Training or Recruitment And Training. White Center hosted several military establishments during the World War II era, and garnered the nickname for these training centers. Another popular reason that is given for the nickname is the alcohol-free zones that surrounded the areas that servicemen were trained in — called “Restricted Alcohol Territory”. The last popular reason for White Center’s nickname is that at a local skate park, youth were referred to as “rink rats”. No matter which explanation is the actual reason why White Center is often called “Rat City”, the name has stood the test of time, and you don’t have to worry about coming to a city infested with rats.
Despite its name, White Center is very culturally diverse. The name “White Center” actually came from one of the community founders’ names. In a coin toss between the two founders, George White and Hiram Green, George White won, and thus the town was given his last name. Back in the early 1900s, many immigrants came to the area, thanks in part to the inexpensive housing developments and commercial areas that were open for development. The commercial district is one large example of the cultural diversity of White Center, as a wide variety of cultural businesses are thriving throughout the district.
White Center students are served by the Highline School District. This provides local students with access to several public elementary schools, one public middle school, and one public high school. Evergreen High School is known for its advance technology-centered programs, providing advanced classes in technology-related fields. Evergreen is also a highly rated school for the arts, as it has an advanced arts program as well. For any students that may require extra one-on-one help, local White Center tutors are available. These tutors can provide guidance and help in a wide variety of subjects and education levels, helping each individual student reach their educational goals.

Families share goals and scheduling preferences through a short intake. That information becomes a learner profile. Grade Potential then introduces your profile to a professional independent tutor whose background aligns. Once the tutor accepts, you’re introduced directly and sessions can begin.
Our packages are highly customizable based on your budget, preferred session cadence, time frame, location, and a few other factors. You’ll be presented with clear pricing before you begin. We support families in choosing the session length and cadence that works best for their individual situation; no hard sales tactics and no obligation to purchase a long-term package.
