    About Edmonds

Easy access to waterways with abundance of fish and game and the plentiful landscape of trees has always made the Pacific Northwest a desirable place for settlers to make a home. Edmonds shellfish and tree cover hills are what attracted logger George Brackett to claim the territory in 1870. Brackett came upon the area while looking for timber in his canoe. Some say he found the territory when a gust of wind blew his canoe onto what is now known as “Brackett’s Landing”. The area had much to offer with its waterways and hills but this was also a curse in disguise. Edmonds territory was a challenge for settlers when they first tried to make the area their homestead.

Along with other leaders, Brackett helped build the town in his new found territory. He has been considered the founder of Edmonds since its beginning. Edmonds soon had a school system, post office, and had been platted and officially named by 1884. By 1890 Edmonds was incorporated as a town. Transportation methods began to grow not long after the city became incorporated. The railroad was built and steamboats also became means of transportation for Edmonds. Before the railroad transportation was difficult in and out of the city. Adding the railway and a steady steamboat system it became easier for the residents to transport goods in and out. This started Edmonds economic growth. A steady ferry route between Edmonds and Kingston was established in 1923. Soon to follow were automobiles. Still today ferries are still in route as a popular means of transportation along with the railroad and cars in and out of Edmonds.

Fir and western red cedar forests enclosed Edmonds. Like many other towns on the Pacific coast, milling was its main commodity. Mills were opened along the coast of the town. Primarily sawmills and shingle mills were their main expertise. As years went on the tree source moved further away from Edmonds. In 1951 the last shingle mill closed and the once iconic smokestack was taken down. A marina was built in place of the mills along the coast, ending an era for Edmonds.

Once a lumber and milling town, today Edmonds as evolved. Its historic downtown offers a waterfront view of snowcapped mountains. They continue their legacy of being a port in the Washington State Ferries system. Ferries constantly come in and out of the port to Kingston, Washington. Their marina stands as one of the largest in the Snohomish county. The town invites visitors to enjoy their art facilities and welcoming walks and marine life. A tutor in the area can help you finish your studies faster so you can enjoy the marine life on the Edmonds coast. If George Brackett found Edmonds by accident on a canoe, most would agree it was a beautiful accident.
