    About Marysville

Got wood? Marysville, Washington does, embedded in the very history of how the town started. Like many towns of the late 1800’s, Marysville started as a lumber mill, with 17 logging camps in the area. These lumber mills were manned by pioneers, men and their families not afraid to brave the frontier, living as neighbors with the Indians and learning the wildlife of the area.

It was James P. Comeford who saw a vision of a real town, and he bought 1,280 acres of those lumber mills for $450 dollars; this would serve as the start of the town we now know as Marysville. The town began with one store that Mr. Comeford added living quarters too, and a plank road (makes sense when you know lumber mills were roaring nearby!)

It wasn’t long before the town saw a need for some way to provide education, and that’s where Mrs. Comeford came in. You can consider her the very first Marysville tutor, as she provided lessons from her home. It wasn’t long after that Marsyville got its first post office with Mr. Comeford being the very first post master (busy people these Comefords!) A saw mill soon followed, and with the store and saw mill business booming, the town soon stretched a whopping 9 blocks! Quite a growth spurt considering its humble beginnings. Business from the local Indians and lumber mills that gave the town its start kept it growing and thriving, a true example of a pioneer town.

When railroad tracks were laid, pioneers from across the country flocked to Marysville hoping to make a living off the local trade. Mr. Comeford incorporated the town, and the start of a large and in charge logging company, the Stimson Logging Company, soon became the towns biggest customer.

Such a large boom prompted the creation of Marysville’s’ first city hall, which oddly enough came 5 years before the towns first high school! Not to fret though, the high school opened its doors, providing traditional education, a great accomplishment considering just a short 25 years ago it was only Mrs. Comeford herself providing education. About a year later the first public library popped up, a place where no doubt citizens met with Marysville tutors, ironically also the same the year that Marsyville saw its first class of graduating high school students.

Today Marysville is a bustling city like any other, but they haven’t forgotten their origins. Many cities in our country started as rough pioneer cities, with nothing more than a single trade and someone with a dream sparked a reality. Marysville is a perfect example of one of those cities.
