Arlington Tutors Come To You

The area known today as Arlington was established in the 1880s. Originally Arlington was laid out as two towns: Arlington and Haller City. Arlington was the larger of the two and it absorbed Haller City in 1903. Prior to white settlement the Arlington area and the Puget Sound region was also inhabited by indigenous Coast Salish peoples. Historically the Arlington economy was based on timber and agriculture. However during the Great Depression of the 1930s the federal relief agencies directed a number of projects in Arlington including the creation of a municipal airport that would also be used as a naval air station during World War II.

The airport played a significant role in national security during the war. In 1942, amid concerns that the Japanese would invade the Aleutian Islands off the coast of Alaska, the airfield was developed as a strategic base for medium bombers Today the airport is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Every year since 1969 the Arlington Airport hosts an annual “fly-in” during the weekend after Independence Day. It is the third-largest event of its kind in the United States. 1,600 planes participate. The Fly-In features air shows every Friday evening and Saturday afternoon, a “war bird” plane exhibition on the ground, and special activities for children. Arlington has so many opportunities to learn about history. An Arlington tutor can make that history come alive.

In addition to the air show Arlington residents have many other community events to look forward to throughout the year. The Eagle Festival celebrates the annual return of bald eagles to the area every Winter. Arlington is home to numerous bald eagles during the winter when they feed on spawning salmon,. The Eagle Festival features rafting on the Stillaguamish River, bird walks and art shows. Arlington has a rich cultural heritage and celebrates its ties to Native American people as well as the environment. The Stillaguamish Tribe hosts an annual powwow and festival of the river at River Meadows County Park every year. Its mission: to increase appreciation of a healthy environment for people, fish, and wildlife and to introduce people to Native American traditional dances and culture.

Day to day Arlington residents have many opportunities for outdoor activity and community engagement. The beauty of woodlands, wetlands, streams, the Stillaguamish River, and nearby mountains are an important part of residents’ quality of life. Walking, hiking, biking and horseback riding are popular activities in Arlington. The Centennial Trail is 10 feet wide and can accommodate a variety of physical abilities. Another popular spot is the Portage Creek Wildlife Area. It features a peaceful stream, paths through open meadows and a chance to see wildlife such as deer, hawk, beaver, raccoon, and mink. There is so much to do in Arlington. Let an Arlington tutor help you get ahead of the curve so that you can get back to everything this city has to offer.
