    About Covington

The City of Covington, Washington, typically has a busy community events calendar—especially at the pool, it seems. The Covington Aquatic Center has something going on year-round, and it’s all wholesome fun.

The center was built in the 1970s as a county pool. The city of Covington took it over in 2004 with all kinds of plans for improvement. Top on the list was to make the place energy-efficient and improve the air circulation. Not far behind was adding features to make the pool a popular place for recreation and exercise for people of all ages. After a few rounds of revisions, the facility has emerged a winner. The former stuffy environment is gone, thanks to a modern HVAC system, and staff no longer feel like they work in a sauna. And there’s now plenty to do for the whole family.

    Features
During public swim hours, pool staff set up either a giant inflatable octopus for kids to climb on or a magic aqua carpet that they can walk or crawl across—if they don’t slide off! There’s also a diving board, flume slide, and rope swing. In the shallow end, there are floating noodles and mats, a basketball goal and balls, and inflatable innertubes. One of the latest improvements was to build a meeting room that can be rented out for birthday parties or community events. Family swim hours differ a little from public swim hours: the deep end is reserved for lap swimming, and the shallow end is open for playtime. Kids who work with a Covington tutor will have way more time to play at the pool.

    Fitness and Instruction
The pool offers group and private swim lessons for all ages. It also holds American Red Cross lifeguard training and water safety instructor classes. For fitness-minded water enthusiasts, there are a variety of WaterX aerobics classes to choose from: WaterX Bootcamp, WaterX Stretch, WaterX Shallow Aerobics, and WaterX Deep Aerobics. Hydro-fit equipment is provided for the classes. Good, old-fashioned lap swimming is always an option as well.

Kids who want more focused exercise than lessons provide can join the Covington Seahorses summer swim team. Participants will improve fitness; learn starts, turns, and all four strokes; and compete regionally. Even before the summer swim team officially starts there are workshops to improve stamina and polish skills.

    Special Events
The pool’s event schedule shows special themed events about once a month, many tied to holidays. On Valentine’s Day, there are sweetheart swims. Spring brings April Pool’s Day and underwater egg hunts. Halloween features spooky swims, when the facility lights are turned out but the water is glowing. Hot weather brings the Summer Splashtacular. In December, the holiday season is ushered in with a Hollydaze float-in movie.

For wholesome fun and exercise for the whole family, there’s no place in Covington like the aquatic center. Students who want to optimize time in the pool should consider using the services of a skilled Covington tutor to help with homework and prepare for tests.
