With its beginnings in the 1850s, Steilacoom’s unique name is said to have come from a Native American word that means “small pink flower”. Still another source claims that Steilacoom comes from the name of the Steilacoom tribe. We may never know the true original of Steilacoom’s name, but it is fun to hear all of the different explanations from locals who have heard many different stories of the town’s history.

Like much of the region, Steilacoom’s main industry back in the 1800s was lumber. Clearing forests in the area, timber was shipped down all the way to California, as San Francisco needed lumber to build and develop. Another interesting historical fact is that Steilacoom was home to the first ever sawmill in the entire state. Not only that, this town was the site of the first jail in all of Washington.
