Normandy Park, Washington has an interesting history about it, and one any Normandy Park tutor would be happy to share with their pupil. In the mid 1920’s the Seattle-Tacoma land company decided to settle 1,200 acres that would be used to create an upscale community. The houses would be modeled after the French Normandy style, and the community would operate under numerous restrictions to keep the community clean and upper class. There was even going to be a yacht club, two community beaches, and a golf course for the residents’ enjoyment.
By the late 1920’s the dream was starting to be realized, and the first home and club house had been erected. In an attempt to draw people in the club house even offered free refreshments and bad concerts. Lots were being grated, and everyone envisioned a busting, upstanding community following soon. If you’ve met with your Normandy Park tutor recently, however, then you probably know that this time period is also right before the Great Depression. Even a yet nonexistent community wasn’t past the reach and devastation of this event.
The Seattle-Tacoma land company abandoned the project, funds dried up, and the cultivated lots and few buildings sat deserted. The club house was sold, and most of the property was sold to private hands. The area become a ghost town before it even really had the ability to be a town in the first place.
Normandy Park was destined to sprout up however, and the area was re-discovered in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. It seemed in no time at all great houses were erected, the likes of which I’m sure the original founders would have loved to see. The community was soon a bustling hub, and it wasn’t long before the homeowners wanted to see their community become a town, in order to give them more power over their futures. The city of Normandy Park, Washington was born, with seven elected council members, who all devote their own time by choice with no salaries.
While Normandy Park may have upscale taste about it, the humble beginnings of the town mark its character. It was victim to the downfall of the economy just like many other towns, however, despite being all but forgotten, it was able to rise from the ashes, a bustling town full of laughter, growth, prosperity, and people that cherish and care about the community in which they live.
