Known as the “city of opportunity”, Tukwila is an up-and-coming community in west central Washington. This medium sized suburban city is considered to be within the metropolitan area of Seattle, providing residents of Tukwila with access to all of the big city amenities that Seattle has to offer. Not only that, Tukwila is a great “commuter town” for those who work in Seattle, as it is an easy drive to the city. That being said, a large commercial district in Tukwila provides many jobs to local residents, and helps to stimulate the local economy. Families that live in Tukwila love all of the opportunities of living here, including its ideal location within the state of Washington.
The native people that lived on the land that is now modern day Tukwila were the Duwamish tribe. According to linguists, the name “Tukwila” means “hazelnut”, and it makes sense due to the hazelnut trees that are found in this region of Washington. The region was perfect for the Duwamish tribe, and they thrived living off of the land. Fishing, hunting, and picking wild berries, the Duwamish people lived here in structures made from local cedar trees.
The first non-native settler to the area that is now Tukwila was Canadian, and his name was Joseph Foster. Foster will forever be known by locals as a founding father to Tukwila, as he served in the local government for decades. Now, a local high school is named after him, as well as a local neighborhood in Tukwila. Soon after the modern town of Tukwila was established, the surrounding area became a farming center within the state of Washington, largely due to its fertile soil. As is true for many towns during the early 1900s, the arrival of the railroads brought in many new industries and opportunities, as well as much better transportation, and Tukwila thrived.
Because of Tukwila’s well-planned transportation system, Tukwila is known for being very successful for commerce. A large shopping mall is located here, along with many large corporation headquarters, including a Boeing facility.
Families that live here in Tukwila feel that the education system in the area provides local children with a great education. Served by Tukwila School District, three public elementary schools, one public middle school, and one public high school is available to local kids. We support families in choosing the session length and cadence that works best for their individual situation; no hard sales tactics and no obligation to purchase a long-term package.
