Des Moines, Washington, is known as the Waterland City, and it’s easy to see why. The city is right on the edge of scenic Puget Sound, with views of the Olympic Mountains and Mt. Rainier. Luckily, Des Moines residents can easily enjoy the prime location at a number of water’s-edge, public facilities. One of the best of these is the city marina.
The Des Moines Marina opened on May 1, 1970, and a 670-foot concrete and aluminum fishing pier was added at the north end in 1980. The marina houses everything from small fishing boats to large sailing yachts. Slip sizes range from 20 to 50 feet; upland, there are 105 dry sheds that fit up to 20-foot-long boats. Between wet and dry moorings, there’s room for a total of 840 recreational vessels. The guest moorage area welcomes vessels up to 100 feet long to its dock on a first-come-first-served basis. Boats of over 32 feet or groups of 5 or more may request reservations at least a week in advance.
The fuel dock sells everything boaters need for a day on the water, including gasoline, diesel, propane, lubricants, snacks, and potable water. Thirty-amp electricity, cable TV, showers, restrooms, and a free waste pump-out station are here too. A boat-repair yard and a boat brokerage, both privately operated, are nearby.
Adventurous souls can also rent paddleboards and kayaks and take to the water for some exercise and an up-close look at marine wildlife. For boating instruction, classes for adults and kids are available through the city and private companies. Students who work with a Des Moines tutor will have much more fun on the water, knowing their homework is done—and done well.
Around the south corner of the marina, the Des Moines Yacht Club is a members-only club whose goal is to provide family-safe boating experiences, promote friendships, and teach and support all levels of boaters. Membership perks include use of a private boat launch with a wash-down station; free WiFi, showers, and ice; use of a lounge with a mini-kitchen and an outdoor deck with panoramic views of the Puget Sound; monthly local cruises; and reciprocal privileges in Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands. Because of its great facilities and beautiful location, the Yacht Club is also a great place to host parties and weddings.
Adjacent to the marina is the Marina District, a pedestrian-friendly, old-fashioned village with boutique retail shops, restaurants, and a grocery store. A dinner of fresh seafood on the waterfront is a special way to end a day of boating and a great reward for students who tap into the expertise of Des Moines tutors to bring home stellar report cards.

Families share goals and scheduling preferences through a short intake. That information becomes a learner profile. Grade Potential then introduces your profile to a professional independent tutor whose background aligns. Once the tutor accepts, you’re introduced directly and sessions can begin.
Our packages are highly customizable based on your budget, preferred session cadence, time frame, location, and a few other factors. You’ll be presented with clear pricing before you begin. We support families in choosing the session length and cadence that works best for their individual situation; no hard sales tactics and no obligation to purchase a long-term package.
Typically within 2-3 business days, depending on subject, location, and schedule availability. Urgent timelines are noted in your profile so introductions prioritize your timing.
