Vashon is a small city in the west central state of Washington that takes the ideal of “island life” and gives it an entirely different meaning. Located on the largest island within Puget Sound, the community of Vashon is also called Vashon Island. Interestingly enough, there are no bridges to Vashon Island, and this is a huge reason why the island population has remained relatively small and the character of the island has such a sheltered, small-town vibe. Its residents love the rural feel of Vashon, as the gorgeous trees and natural surroundings make it a truly beautiful and scenic place to live.
Before European settlers arrived to this area of the state of Washington, it is believed that Native Americans resided here on Vashon Island. Evidence has been discovered that the Marpole, Salish, and S-Homamish tribes all lived here thousands of years ago. White settlers arrived in the late 1700s, and logging was a popular trade here on Vashon Island, as is true of this region of Washington. Besides timber, another very popular export came years later from a somewhat unexpected source. Strawberries were grown here on the island, and being a large part of the economic growth of the time.
“If there are no bridges, how do people get to and from Vashon?”, you might be wondering. A water taxi service provides quick and easy boat transportation from the city of Seattle, which is perfect for residents of Vashon who work in the big nearby city. Other local ferries serve the island and provide daily trips to the mainland and back. A small municipal airport is also located on the island, though the flights do not operate on a normal, reliable schedule.
When it comes to an education system for the children of Vashon, one might think that residents have to travel to the mainland for schooling. Actually, there is a public elementary school, public middle school, and public high school on the island, all schools operated by the Vashon Island School District. There are also private school options for elementary school and middle school, though there is no private high school on Vashon Island. Local students on Vashon Island that might need extra help with their studies can hire local Vashon tutors for one-on-one assistance. These local tutors boast expertise in a wide variety of subjects and schooling levels, and can help each student reach their educational goals.
