    About Gig Harbor

Located in the beautiful coastal city of Gig Harbor, Washington, the Harbor History Museum's self-appointed mission is to bring the heritage of the city to its citizens by gathering, protecting, and sharing the history of the area.

The rich cultural and maritime past of Gig Harbor provides the museum with ample opportunity to highlight its award-winning exhibits, historical schoolhouse, maritime vessels, and hands-on learning and exploration opportunities for all ages. The state-of-the-art building, nestled beside the water, is an impressive sight and houses exhibits such as the south sound Native Americans, industries that shaped the early days of the city, three Narrows Bridges, early area settlers, and commercial fishing; displayed within the glass-paned gallery, the 65-foot fishing vessel Shenandoah and Thunderbird Hull #1 sailboat are a striking homage to Gig Harbor's rich maritime past.

A thirst for history, after all, is the cornerstone of a community that understands itself. What better institute to carry that torch than the Harbor History Museum in Gig Harbor, Washington? The museum, originally established in 1964, has been through several rounds of rebranding but has always been enthusiastic in its pursuit of providing an unwavering identity for the Gig Harbor community. Whether citizen, visitor, researcher, or student, the Harbor History museum has something for everyone. The wide array of artifacts, interactive exhibits, small theatre, photos, and personal anecdotes showcases the history of Gig Harbor in an interesting and enveloping manner.

One of the more interesting components of the Harbor History Museum's educational programs is it's Pioneer School Experience. The participating children experience a traditional pioneer-era classroom within a fully immersive setting. Set in a one-room schoolhouse, students are encouraged to dress in period costume. The students are even given a pioneer identity to fully support their experience, and a "school marm" teaches through pioneer-style lessons, recitations, and music. Learning in a non-traditional, engaging environment can be an impressionable experience, much like Gig Harbor tutoring. Whether a child is struggling and needs extra attention or would benefit from an extra challenge outside the classroom, Gig Harbor tutors can deliver.

The Harbor History Museum is a testament to the city's past, but in looking ahead, the next generation of Gig Harbor citizens should be prepared to carry the reputation of the city forward. Gig Harbor tutors can do just that: help every child succeed in the classroom and become a contributive member of Gig Harbor's future.
