Travel to Snohomish, Washington, and you will undoubtedly hear about Stocker farms, a family run operation off of a local site that was started in 1919. Edwin Sr. and Sarah Stocker started the farm back when they moved to the little farmhouse that still sits on site. The farm started as a dairy farm, where the Stockers raised their four kids. When the kids were young the Stockers branched into growing corn and selling it at the local market, and soon had the reputation for growing the best corn around.
The farm was passed down to Edwin Jr., who continued the tradition of dairy farming and growing corn. He also started other vegetable crops and started the farm market they have on site today. Edwin Jr.’s son Keith now runs most of the operation, however you’ll often find Edwin Jr. and his wife Edith still on the farm, where his reputation as the “Corn King” still goes strong to this day. Maybe he should have been a Snohomish tutor for agriculture!
The farm offers many more attractions, including the farm market which as a variety of fresh vegetables, fruits, and flowers. In the fall, you can enjoy their pumpkin festival, where people come from all around to explore the pumpkin patch and pick the pumpkins that will decorate window sills, driveways, and porches all over the town. No pumpkin patch is complete without a corn maze, however and the Stocker farms maze doesn’t disappoint. There’s also a newly founded haunted attraction for those brave enough to venture out to. After the fall season, you can even find Christmas trees growing on this farm, and they offer precut ready to go trees, or you can have the full experience and cut down that tree yourself. Even in the off season you might still find an event or two happening at the Stocker Farm, from birthdays to weddings.
In rural communities such as Snohomish, farms like the Stocker farm are what gives the community it start and ability to grow. Even though many have branched away from this way of living, the people that started these farms paved the way for their children and children’s children to be anything they wanted to be, so long as they were willing to put in the work. So, work hard, meet with your Snohomish tutors regularly, and who knows, you might just be the next big thing in Snohomish!
