In the northwester region of the state of Washington, you’ll find the city of Bremerton, a naval town along the Puget Sound with lots of character and beautiful scenery. Considered to be a part of the metropolitan area of Seattle, residents love that they are only a ferry ride away from the big city. Bremerton is also the largest city in the county, providing residents with access to many local amenities as a result. Boasting a high quality of life and a low crime rate, Bremerton is a great place to raise a family.
How did Bremerton get its name? To find this answer, you must take an interesting trip back in time. Looking back to the late 1800s, you’ll find an immigrant from Germany, William Bremer, a city planner from nearby Seattle. At this point in time, this region of Washington had been opened up for settlement, after a treaty with the local Native American tribe that resided here. Because of its ideal geographical location, Bremerton was flagged as the perfect place to establish a naval shipyard in the Pacific Northwest. And so, Bremerton grew in national importance, and soon the Puget Sound Navy Yard was established here.
Because of its key location and the generation of so many local jobs, Bremerton was a bustling city during the early and mid 1900s. With World War II creating a large supply of needs related to shipyard work, Bremerton’s population rose to an all-time high, just under 100,000. After the war, however, the population shrunk considerably, with the loss of war-related jobs in Bremerton.
Since the 1990s, Bremerton has shifted its focus to renovating its historic districts and downtown areas, making the city much more friendly for tourism. Because of its rich history, there is so much to see in Bremerton, and the city has made efforts to capitalize on the tourism industry for this very reason. Many guided tours are available throughout the city, making it a destination city within the state of Washington.
Families that live in modern-day Bremerton love it here. It is clean, beautiful, and is constantly working on renovations and improvements. Beautiful parks, and, of course, access to the historic Puget Sound, make Bremerton a very attractive place to live. When it comes to education, Bremerton provides a high quality selection of schools, from primary school through high school. For students that need extra help, local Bremerton tutors are available. These tutors can provide assistance in a wide variety of subjects, helping each student reach their educational goals.
