Saint Paul is not only the second most highly populated city in the beautiful state of Minnesota, it is also the capital city of the land of 10,000 lakes. One of the two “Twin Cities”, Saint Paul’s sister city is Minneapolis, and is only a short car ride away. For being such a large city and also the capital city of the state, Saint Paul boasts a very high quality of life. People just plain love living here, even with the harsh winters of the midwest.
The Twin City Metropolitan Area includes both Saint Paul and Minneapolis, and the total population that lives here is over three-and-a-half million. Along with this large population comes a lot of opportunity; many jobs, industries, and a thriving economy are all home here in Saint Paul. Because of its location within the metropolis, Saint Paul is a hub of activity, and yet it is still convenient to live in Saint Paul and commute to nearby cities in the metropolis.
Before this area became what it is today, the land that is now Saint Paul was once a great region for native tribal indigenous peoples. Once the land was acquired by the United States as a part of the Minnesota Territory in the middle of the 19th century. Because of its location along the eastern shore of the Mississippi River, this area was a great location for trades of all kinds, and easy transportation. One of the local tribes that is said to have lived here is the Hopewell Indians, and thanks to local burial mounds we can track their time on this land back thousands of years. A Sioux tribe is also known to have lived in this area before white settlers arrived to the midwest.
A local tradition, the Saint Paul Winter Carnival has been going on for well over a hundred years. This huge event is attended by hundreds of thousands of visitors, locals, and tourists alike each year, and includes ice sculpture design contests, an ice castle, festival cuisine, and I can imagine a lot of hot chocolate! Humorously referred to as “another Siberia”, going to a winter carnival in the midwestern United States is not for the faint of heart.
Known for having a large number of institutes of higher learning, Saint Paul is a wonderful place to get an education for students of any age. With a large school district and access to numerous elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools, there are public, private, and charter school options across the board. Saint Paul is also known for its diversity, as the district has counted over seventy languages spoken throughout the district. Of course, all of these languages are accommodated for, helping students with all backgrounds find success. For students that may need extra help, local Saint Paul tutors are available. These tutors can provide one-on-one assistance to students in a wide range of subjects.
