    About Chaska

About 20 miles southwest from Minneapolis, Chaska, Minnesota is a small community which is the seat of Carver County. Native American cultures, the Hopewell and later the Dakota, first settled the area around Chaska about 2,000 years ago. They left behind several burial mounds in this part of Minnesota, most notably those at Indian Mounds Park in St. Paul. The Dakota, often referred to as the Sioux, occupied this land when American colonist-explorer Jonathan Carver traversed the Minnesota River, making-contact with both the Dakota and the French fur trappers who traded with the Dakota. By the 1850’s American settlers had moved into the area, and the town, reflecting its Native American heritage, was named Chaska, the name given the first-born male in a Dakota family. Over the years the Chaska economy has relied on brick manufacturing and the agricultural processing of sugar beets, corn, peas and tomatoes.

In 2007 Money magazine ranked Chaska as one of “America’s Best Places to Live” citing its small-town charm and proliferation of technology and biotech firms (Chaska was the birthplace of the high-tech exercise machine NordicTrack). It’s certain that a Chaska tutor can get you ahead of the academic curve so you can enjoy the sights and sounds of Chaska and the wider Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. One of the most popular pastimes in Chaska is the Olympic sanctioned sport of curling. Curling involves the sliding of large round stones on ice towards a target area. Curling, invented in Scotland in the 16th century, is played by two teams with four players each. The Chaska Curling Center was opened in 2015 and holds leagues throughout the year.

Chaska is home to Hazeltine National Golf Club, the best private golf course in the Minneapolis area and site of several prestigious national and international tournaments. Hazeltine recently hosted the Ryder Cup, a contest between American and European golfers held every two years. Hazeltine has also hosted the U.S. Open, first in 1970 and later in 1991. The course witnessed the dramatic 2009 PGA Championship won by Y.E. Yang in a playoff over Tiger Woods. On the northern edge of Chaska, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum was established in 1958 and consists of 1,200 acres of gardens, tree collections and more than 5,000 varieties of plant species. The arboretum offers miles of trails through both prairie and woods habitats. It also features specialized tours, conferences and gallery shows.

For sports fans, nearby Minneapolis and St. Paul are home to sports teams in every major professional league in the United States. The beloved Minnesota Vikings of the NFL opened play in 2016 in brand new U.S. Bank Stadium, a state of the art complex in downtown Minneapolis. Basketball’s Timberwolves play at the Target Center while Major League Baseball’s Twins play their home games right next door from the Timberwolves at Target Field. And, it wouldn’t be Minnesota without a representative in the National Hockey League. The Minnesota Wild, who began play in 2000 took over as the state’s hockey representative when the North Stars left for Dallas in 1993. The Wild play in St. Paul at the Xcel Energy Center.
