Brooklyn Center Minnesota was originally established under the name Brooklyn Township in 1873. Once known as a center of local trade, the rural area was noted for market gardening or small-scale production of fruits, vegetables and flowers as cash crops. These were frequently sold directly to consumers and restaurants. At the turn of the century market gardens in Brooklyn Center served the growing, nearby population of Minneapolis.
One of Brooklyn Center’s most well known sites from the days of its rural roots is Brooklyn Farm. Known today as the Earle Brown Farm, the property started as an early pioneer site. Minnesota native son Earle Brown inherited the land from his grandfather in 1905. Earle Brown dedicated himself to developing the land for the rest of his life. He began as farmer and a horse breeder. Before long Brown made the farm into a local showplace with bright red buildings, white trim and crisp white fences. He also had a world renown collection of Belgian draught horses. Today the farm is fully restored. You can meet here with your Brooklyn City tutor and make history come alive.
Earle Brown farm played host to many significant events in Brooklyn Center history. In WWI Brown established Minnesota’s first airfield here and allowed his farm to be used as a training ground for military pilots. Historians suggest that the site produced 50 new pilots every month. In 1929 Brown founded the Minnesota State Highway Patrol and, once again, made his property into training grounds for officers. The second story of one building on the property housed a shooting range. The basement of the same building kept a holding cell.
Earle Brown was very generous with his farm and the City of Brooklyn Center honors their native son ever year with a summer festival called, appropriately, Earl Brown Days. Held every year in late June this 3 day event features a parade, fireworks, and nightly community market where visitors can discover local businesses, artisans and organizations. Kids and teens can visit market areas just for them and enjoy face painting, inflatables, bingo, games and art activities. Brooklyn City tutors can help you get ahead of your studies so you can get back to all the great things the town has to offer.
Brooklyn Center residents enjoy a very active way of life year round. Brooklyn Center sits on the West Bank of the mighty Mississippi River. There are 70 miles of trails and sidewalks, 522 acres of parks and recreations space. Brooklyn Center also features a 20-mile trail system that extends to all neighboring communities. Residents can walk or bicycle almost anywhere in minutes. Brooklyn Center also features a portion of the Mississippi River Trail; a bicycle route that follows the mighty river from its headwaters all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. The North Mississippi Regional Park is a great source of activity year round. When the weather is nice check out the park’s wading pool and miles of trails covering more than 67 acres. When there is snow on the ground the park’s interpretive center offers a winter wilderness survival class and nature walks by snowshoe.
