Some traditions are well worth hanging on to. That’s certainly the case for Columbia Heights, Minnesota, which is gearing up for its 61st consecutive Columbia Heights Lions Club Jamboree. Many older town residents remember attending this event as children. In fact, one council member reminisces that he and his wife had their first date at the carnival years ago.
The Jamboree, held at Huset Park in late June, announces the summer in a big way. Events change year to year but typically include the following:
Columbia Heights royalty
Girls and young women who live or work in the Columbia Heights School District boundaries compete in the pageant’s three categories: Little Miss (age six to eight), Junior Miss (fifth grade to ninth grade), and Miss Columbia Heights (age seventeen to twenty-two). The winners represent Columbia Heights at local events, and the new Miss Columbia Heights earns a generous scholarship.
Kids fishing clinic
Experienced anglers from throughout the county teach kids fishing skills such as casting and lure selection, fish identification, and fishing safety. Their goal is to whet the appetite for fishing in these youngsters. All equipment is provided. The clinic is free but the number of participants is limited.
Jamboree parade
Each year, floats, fire engines, marching bands, town dignitaries, and even a few surprises stroll down the parade route, lending the jamboree an air of celebration and excitement.
Carnival
Carnival games and rides run throughout most of the weekend. Traditional favorites and some new challengers are always available.
Art classes
An art teacher guides community members in making a collaborative project (mosaic stumps for 2017). Participants may also complete a craft they can keep.
Adult softball tournament
Softball enthusiasts can sign up for a team and vie for the winning trophy.
Heights Idol Jamboree
Columbia Height talent comes out in full force during this “Idol” competition, complete with renowned judges. Singers, dancers, and other stage talents are encouraged to apply. Youth and adult acts compete for cash, prizes, and trophies.
There are many more events each year, including a waffle breakfast, a beer garden, a craft fair, and a concert from a local band. Also look for outreach efforts by the city as they collect ideas and opinions from community members regarding the city’s priorities and services. The jamboree is also an excellent time for parents to network and share resources, such as the best tutors in Columbia Heights.
The Jamboree ends with a colorful display of fireworks—but that is just the beginning of an action-packed summer in Columbia Heights. A Columbia Heights tutor can help students finish off the school year with a bang and be ready for the jamboree and all the excitement the summer can hold.

Families share goals and scheduling preferences through a short intake. That information becomes a learner profile. Grade Potential then introduces your profile to a professional independent tutor whose background aligns. Once the tutor accepts, you’re introduced directly and sessions can begin.
Our packages are highly customizable based on your budget, preferred session cadence, time frame, location, and a few other factors. You’ll be presented with clear pricing before you begin. We support families in choosing the session length and cadence that works best for their individual situation; no hard sales tactics and no obligation to purchase a long-term package.
Typically within 2-3 business days, depending on subject, location, and schedule availability. Urgent timelines are noted in your profile so introductions prioritize your timing.
In-person at home or another convenient, quiet, safe location (like the local library). When families need flexibility, online sessions are also available.
Experienced, professional independent tutors with strong subject knowledge and a track record of working one-on-one with students. Many hold degrees in their fields; some are certified teachers or graduate students with specialized expertise.
Yes—safety is our top priority. Tutors complete screening through Simpliverified background checks, consistent with local requirements and platform standards.

Support spans elementary through college across all core subjects (math, reading, writing, science, languages) plus test prep (e.g., SAT/ACT, AP, GRE) and many electives. If it’s taught in school, there’s likely a tutor with relevant experience. Adult learners can also benefit from tutoring services in a wide variety of subjects.
