    About Champlin

Along the banks of the Mississippi River about 25 miles north of Minneapolis, Champlin, Minnesota is regarded as one of the best suburbs in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area by the real estate website Movoto. Although he never lived there, the town is named after Commodore Stephen Champlin whose daughter, Ellen, married John B. Cook, one of the founders of the town. Champlin was a hero of the War of 1812 as captain of the schooner Scorpion which fired the first shots in the defeat of a British naval force during the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813. Chmaplin wasn’t officially incorporated as a city until 1971 when Champlin Township and the village of Champlin combined.

Champlin’s history, however, goes back much further to the 17th century when Franciscan missionary Father Louis Hennepin accompanied the French explorer La Salle on his journey up the Mississippi River. Hennepin is credited with discovering St. Anthony Falls on the Mississippi just northeast of downtown Minneapolis. Hennepin recounted his experiences in his book A Description of Louisiana. Unfortunately, he exaggerated much of this work, depicting the Native American Dakotas as barbarous savages. Hennepin eventually gave his name to the county where Champlin is located. Champlin celebrates Father Hennepin each year in June with a three-day celebration including a parade, amusement rides and live music.

A Champlin tutor will be able to keep you ahead of the academic curve so you can discover and explore Champlin and the greater Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. To the southwest of Champlin is the Elm Creek Park Reserve, a 4,900-acre winter and summer recreational area. The largest park in the Three Rivers Park District, Elm Creek features a nature center, several miles of hiking, biking and snowmobile trails, a swimming pond, archery range and disc golf course. The reserve is also a great place to see wildlife such as eagles, deer, beavers, loons and swans. Within Champlin itself there are another 300 acres of city owned parks offering playgrounds, picnic areas, athletic fields and tennis courts. Doris A. Kemp Park and Mississippi Point Park include access to the river and have fishing, boat ramps and canoeing.

For art lovers, Champlin is only a short drive away from downtown Minneapolis which offers several museums and galleries. Opened in 1879 as a one room gallery, the Walker Art Center is today one of the finest contemporary art museums in the world. It began its focus on modern art in the 1940’s displaying works by important artists of the day like Edward Hopper, Lyonel Feininger and Franz Marc. The Walker is right next door to the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, one of the largest sculpture parks in the United States. The abstract “Spoonbridge and Cherry” is the garden’s most popular piece. A tilted spoon with a cherry, sculpted by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen in the 1980’s, the sculpture has become an iconic symbol for the twin cities.
