    About Seal Beach

Seal Beach California is another gorgeous coastal city known for its fantastic beaches and breath taking views. Many people enjoy the ocean and waves, and perhaps you’ve sat on the sand watching the surfers cut through the water, wishing you too could be a part of that. Luckily, Seal Beach has just what you need, a local surfing school that provides lessons to anyone that is eager to learn. You can almost think of them as your Seal Beach tutor for surfing.

But where did this sport originate, and who first thought of attempting to ride a wave with a piece of wood? Surfing is one of the oldest sports, with its origins dating back 3000 years ago when Western Polynesian fishermen discovered they could get back much faster with their catches by riding pieces of wood on the waves. While no one really knows when surfing made the transition to a sport, there is record of kings and queens of the Sandwich Isles in the 15th century competing in “he’enalu” which loosely translates to wave sliding.

Surfing has been documented in historical records of the 1700’s as well, when Europeans and Polynesians first made contact in Tahiti. A captain of the time documented watching a man in his canoe riding the waves to the beach just for the fun of it.

It is probably a safe bet that the early Polynesian settlers of the Hawaiian Islands were already skilled at surfing, and within a few hundred years surfing had evolved in to the beginning forms of what we see today. Hawaiians who could surf were given the highest reputation, and began developing their own prayers and board shapers, scoping out beaches that only they were able to use. Every surfboard made went through a scared ritual and there were only a select few types of wood thought to be good enough for the crafting of a board. The board maker would select a tree and dig it up around its roots. He would then place fish along the roots as an offering to the gods for allowing him to take the tree. Once this was done, the tree could be removed and shaping could begin.

Many of the activities we see around us are rich in history, and it can be fun to see how the things we sometimes take for granted evolved. There are many more interesting stories like this one that you could learn from your Seal Beach tutor, whether you’re into math, literature, science, or another topic!
