El Segundo means “the second” in Spanish. But El Segundo, California, is by no means second in production, industry, economy, or ambition despite its small size and obscure location, sharing a border with Los Angeles International Airport. El Segundo could rightly be called “El Primero” (the first) in many ways.
The city earned its name as the second location for a refinery associated with Standard Oil (who later became Chevron), and other industries soon followed in El Segundo’s footsteps. The oil industry is a crucial player to American prosperity, and for many years, the United States processed its own oil at its own refineries. Many of these refineries have decreased in number with globalization, but their presence in the American post-war economy should not be underestimated—especially the work done in El Segundo.
In addition, American aviation would not be where it is today without El Segundo. For example, the Douglas Aircraft Company plant in the city was one of the major aircraft manufacturing facilities in California during World War II. This facility particularly produced dive bombers, which were crucial to the United States’ success in the Pacific theater. Douglas Aircraft company is now run by Northrop Grumman and is still an aircraft plant. Much of American manufacturing now happens overseas, but El Segundo can still proudly claim many important commodities are made in the USA. The city even earned an Eddy Award in 2006 for being the most business-friendly community in Los Angeles County.
Moreover, the El Segundo power plant (owned by American energy company NRG) is on the forefront of innovative methods to deliver energy in a cost-efficient and environmentally responsible way. NRG created a combined cycle power island, providing power for 240,000 households. The new power plant uses two generators: a Siemens gas turbine and an additional steam turbine. Natural gas drives the gas turbine, while the hot exhaust gases generates steam for the steam turbine. The efficiency of the power plant has increased up to 58%. A significant environmental boon of this type of power plant is that in combustion, natural gas generates relatively little carbon dioxide compared to other fossil fuels. Thanks to El Segundo’s forward thinking culture and communal work ethic, NRG has had the opportunity to make some significant, positive changes to the energy market.
Grade Potential tutors working in El Segundo are like the city—they truly come in “el primero” above all else. They are friendly, open to new and creative methods, and help provide an environment where learning can happen. Their clients benefit from their innovation and work ethic, just as the residents of El Segundo benefit from the industriousness of the city’s local economy.

Families share goals and scheduling preferences through a short intake. That information becomes a learner profile. Grade Potential then introduces your profile to a professional independent tutor whose background aligns. Once the tutor accepts, you’re introduced directly and sessions can begin.
Our packages are highly customizable based on your budget, preferred session cadence, time frame, location, and a few other factors. You’ll be presented with clear pricing before you begin. We support families in choosing the session length and cadence that works best for their individual situation; no hard sales tactics and no obligation to purchase a long-term package.
Typically within 2-3 business days, depending on subject, location, and schedule availability. Urgent timelines are noted in your profile so introductions prioritize your timing.
In-person at home or another convenient, quiet, safe location (like the local library). When families need flexibility, online sessions are also available.
Experienced, professional independent tutors with strong subject knowledge and a track record of working one-on-one with students. Many hold degrees in their fields; some are certified teachers or graduate students with specialized expertise.
Yes—safety is our top priority. Tutors complete screening through Simpliverified background checks, consistent with local requirements and platform standards.

Support spans elementary through college across all core subjects (math, reading, writing, science, languages) plus test prep (e.g., SAT/ACT, AP, GRE) and many electives. If it’s taught in school, there’s likely a tutor with relevant experience. Adult learners can also benefit from tutoring services in a wide variety of subjects.
Most families choose 60-90 minute sessions 1-2 times per week. Cadence and length are set directly with the tutor to fit the student’s goals, pace, and schedule.
