In the heart of southern Los Angeles County you will find the small city of Cudahy, California. This small suburban community is known for its strong Latino culture, as the area consists primarily of immigrant families with a Hispanic heritage.
What’s in a name? How did Cudahy come upon such a unique name? Well, Cudahy is named after the man who founded the city, Michael Cudahy. Mr. Cudahy purchased a large parcel of land in the early 1900s from a local rancho. Mr. Cudahy then parceled out the land into different pieces, selling it to developers who formed the structure that is here today in Cudahy. These parcels accounted for local parks, community gardens, and areas for orchards of fruit trees. This structure became a popular way to develop nearby communities, including places within Los Angeles County and the San Gabriel Valley.
To give you a feel for how “small town” the city of Cudahy is, it wasn’t uncommon to see residents riding through the city’s neighborhoods and downtown areas on horseback, even as late as the 1960s. Many farms in this area give the city of Cudahy a rural feel, despite being so densely populated.
Part of the reason why Cudahy is so densely populated today is due to its very convenient proximity to Los Angeles, along with other nearby cities. Many residents live in Cudahy and commute every day to surrounding cities including Los Angeles, as the distance is not far. Los Angeles provides many local amenities to residents of Cudahy, including access to big-city events, arts, and culture. Even though Cudahy is primarily residential, being so close to Los Angeles allows for residents to have access to things they might otherwise miss out on.
Served by the Los Angeles Unified School District, Cudahy has access to a number of public elementary schools, public middle schools, and public high schools. Local private schools and charter schools are also available, and parents appreciate the fact that they have so many different local choices when choosing the right school for their children. For any student of any grade level that needs extra after-school help, local Cudahy tutors are available to hire. These local tutors are well versed in a wide variety of subjects and can meet one-on-one with each student to help them develop better studying skills. With time and dedication, each student can reach their own educational goals.
