    About Echo Park

On the outside, Echo Park might seem like any other neighborhood, cute houses, locals, stores selling their wares, nothing out of the ordinary. If you dive deeper in, however, Echo Park is actually a very interesting community rich in history. So, next time you finish a lesson with your Echo Park tutor, take some time to visit some of these unique spots that make Echo Park the town that it is.

Echo Park has almost two dozen different sets of stairs in the town limits. Some of these stairs are older than automobiles, and even predate the paved streets of the town. The most popular set of stairs is the Baxter Street stairs, 231 steps that, while daunting, give you some of the best views you could ask for. On your ascent up this staircase you will see breathtaking views of Downtown L.A., the Griffith Observatory, and even the Hollywood Sign!

Once you’re done with that little work out, take a stroll down Carroll Avenue. This street is comprised of gorgeous Victorian style homes, with all the glamour and allure you’d expect. These aren’t just modern mimics though, many of these homes date back to the 19th century, and have even been featured in movies! It’s not just the homes that set the tone, however. The streets are still adorned with old fashioned light posts and hitching posts once used to secure horses.

If old fashioned homes aren’t your things, perhaps nature is! Check out the Chavez Ravine Arboretum; founded in 1893 it is the first and oldest arboretum in Southern California. They have over 100 different species of trees, many that have claims of being the oldest and largest in the state, and some in the United States! Admission is free, so anyone can take a stroll anytime they like!

If you’re more into the odd, then the Time Travel Market is the place for you. Featuring items for sale from both the past and future, including robot parts, and all the pet care you might need for your personal pet robot, the store might at first be a little confusing. It is actually run by a local writing education organization, similar to the one you found your Echo Park tutor through, and the store is how they help to generate funds for their program.

As you can see, Echo Park is no boring old little suburbia. Take a day and explore, and see what new sights and experiences you might just find!
