Lomita, California is a small city in Los Angeles county that spans only a few square miles wedged between other communities such as Gardena and Torrance and Harbor City. Obscure and easy to drive through without noticing much, Lomita actually boasts a notable claim to fame: Chad Qualls, an MLB pitcher, was born there in 1978.
Qualls is currently a free agent, and has consequently played with the Houston Astros, Arizona Diamondbacks, Tampa Bay Rays, San Diego Padres, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, Miami Marlins and Colorado Rockies.
Qualls’ career resulted from playing baseball in high school and college, first drafted in 1999 by the Toronto Blue Jays. Successful since the beginning of his sports career, Qualls has been scouted consistently from team to team, with offers to pitch in the millions of dollars per season he can put in. His pitching style is versatile, making him an asset to whatever team he is drafted in his free agent status. Qualls throws two main pitches: a heavy sinker at around 90 mph, and a hard slider at about 80 mph. He typically uses the sinker to get ahead in the count and the slider to get strikeouts. He also occasionally uses a changeup against left-handed hitters. His work ethic and consistent talent on the field has contributed to a long career from 2000 onward.
Often, success comes from persistent and consistent dedication. Qualls was not known for any one thing—other than pitching—and has worked hard to perfect his craft. He lives a quiet life outside of baseball, which reflects the personal discipline he invests to playing. Academic success is a similar phenomenon. Students do not need to be one in a million in order to succeed; instead, students need to develop consistency and good habits to see the results they desire. A tutor, like a personal coach or trainer, can help hone the academic skills necessary for students to discipline themselves into effective achievement. Qualls’ example of athletic prowess is an example to students and fellow athletes alike.
