Mid-City, California is lucky enough to call itself home to the largest collection of art in the Western United States, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. This exhibit collects works across the span of time and distance. They focus on works from history as well as cultural works, bridging the gap between varying ethnicities. You can tour the museum all on your own, or join a tour group, where you will be guided by knowledgeable personal through the various exhibits; you can think of them as your Mid-City tutors for art.
Los Angeles County Museum of Art offers almost 130,000 pieces of art, and strives to increase that number every day. They pride themselves on providing an encyclopedic collection, something for absolutely everyone that walks through the door. That’s no small feat considering the museum sees over a million visitors a year. In their displays, you can find Latin American art dating as far back as pre-Columbian times all the way to modern day contemporary artists, as well as Asian art. You will also find one of the most extensive collections of Islamic art as well on display.
People don’t just visit the museum in person, however. The museum is also digital, in the form of online collections and scholarly catalogues, as well as interactive events the Los Angeles County Museum of Art hosts on their website.
The museum actually got its start as a part of the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science, and Art in 1910. The county wanted a museum that would focus just on these artistic masterpieces, however, and so in 1961 the Los Angeles County Museum of Art was formed. A few years after that the museum opened its doors, allowing all to come and experience what they had to offer.
As the years passed the museum kept outgrowing its home, and more and more buildings were added on to create additional space. There are now buildings dedicated to Japanese art, postwar art, and the largest naturally-lit open space building a museum has offered, with a wide variety of rotating exhibits.
This one of a kind museum has something to show everyone, and takes pride in their collection and how it is displayed. There are people there to answer your questions, and with new exhibits replacing old ones there is always something different to see. So after your lesson with your Mid-City tutor maybe stroll on down to the museum and explore the largest art exhibit the west coast has to offer!

Our packages are highly customizable based on your budget, preferred session cadence, time frame, location, and a few other factors. You’ll be presented with clear pricing before you begin. We support families in choosing the session length and cadence that works best for their individual situation; no hard sales tactics and no obligation to purchase a long-term package.
