The town of Harbor City, California started as a large dream, the vision of a couple developers. Development started in 1914, and the plan was to level a hill in the front of the town, that would let the ocean fill into a natural reservoir, turning Harbor City into a beach front town. They named the main street Belleporte, which translates to “beautiful port” a reminder of the goals the developers originally had.
The town grew like crazy, with large 300 foot lots plotted out in order to give residents enough room to build their houses and still be able to grow a few personal crops for food and raise some animals. Most of the homes were simple wooden structures consisting of two bedrooms, a living room, a dining room, and large porches.
The town was such a large success that just a year after the town was founded the population was so large the need for a school arose. Construction began in 1915, and before long a modest yet stand out Italian style building served as an auditorium as well as a town hall. This would have been the first place that students were able to meet with their Harbor city tutors. They put so much detail into it that they even erected two towers topped with pigs reading books. They included a large courtyard with small gardens and shady trees. Verandas were added off the end of each classroom so students could enjoy the view, and in the back of the garden another building was erected which served as the restrooms. Unfortunately, this building is the only original building left, as the rest of the school was torn down in 1970 for progress of other structures.
When World II hit, it affected Harbor City. Funds for expansion of the town ran out, and the hill was originally going to be removed and allow the time to live up to its name still stands today. The harbor never filled up, and Los Angeles eventually incorporated this section as they wanted to gain access to as much land and port space as possible. Today Harbor City is still a great place, full of history and every amenity you could want, including access to Harbor City tutors, available since 1915 when the first school was erected. Though the original school no longer stands, the town still provides the best education it can to its young pupils.
