    About Lynwood

Lynwood, a small community outside of Los Angeles, developed in size and industry in the post-war era. Part of what made Lynwood so easily prosperous after it took off was the existence of its railway depot, designed in 1933 by Bernard Maybeck. Maybeck, along with the architecture firm of Greene and Greene, was responsible for revolutionizing the arts and crafts style in architecture in California. Lynwood’s railway depot is a unique structure among others, especially given its connection to Maybeck.

Lymwood is one of the few remaining Pacific Electric passenger depots. It has survived the devastating Long Beach earthquake of 1933, neglect and vandalism and stands evidence of a part of greater Los Angeles and Southern California heritage. The style of the Lynwood Depot is unique in that it apparently was never repeated in the Pacific Electric System.

Simple, yet beautiful, the Railway Depot reflects the character of the 1930s with its fusion of stucco and Spanish colonial elements with steeply-gabled eaves and deep porches typical of arts and crafts architecture. Maybeck is famous for his design of the San Francisco Palace of Fine Arts, but his mark on Lynwood is unmistakable. The Railway Depot is a spot of historical significance for the city, and is a quaint structure to visit for residents and tourists alike.

For Lynwood to experience success, this location was of the utmost importance. Commodities coming two and from Lynwood helped foster its economic growth and industry. Pacific Electric was a privately owned mass transit system in Southern California consisting of electrically powered streetcars, urban railway cars, and buses, and was the largest electric railway system in the world in the 1920s. Organized around the city centers of Los Angeles and San Bernardino, it connected cities in Los Angeles County, Orange County, San Bernardino County and Riverside County. This preceded the advent of the mass-produced vehicle, and set the stage for a growth in population and economy.

Tutors, like the Railway Depot, serve a crucial role in the growth and progress of their clients. Academic success is best fostered by long-standing relationships and dependability. The simple beauty of the Lynwood Railway Depot is also reflected in the simple duties that tutors undertake to serve their students—dedication, persistence, and reliability are all attributes of the unique station, just like the attributes of good tutors who know how to best work with their clients. Tutors in Lynwood take cues from this building, and its admirable history, to help struggling students turn bad grades around and find the academic success they so desire.
