The Golden Poppy, state flower of California, grows in abundance in Lancaster—a city located in the Antelope Valley, just north of the San Gabriel mountains outside of Los Angeles. Its warm, arid climate and sandy soil is perfect for the poppy to thrive. As a result, Lancaster hosts the California Poppy Festival year after year, garnering over 60,000 participants on a regular basis.

In addition to celebrating the state flower, the Poppy Festival offers a two-day fun-filled experience for the entire family. Animal attractions, arts and crafts vendors, a car show, farmers market, festival food, healthy living pavilions, music, and public safety services all participate in the festival. Concerts are also part of the festival experience while the fields surrounding Lancaster are in full bloom of liquid gold poppies.

The California Poppy Reserve, just outside of Lancaster, is located on California's most consistent poppy-bearing land. A good hiking route for a variety of wildflowers would be around the North Poppy Loop Trail and then up and over the Tehachapi Vista Point Trail, or up to Kitanemuk Vista Point. While the festival happens for only two days, this reserve is open year-round, even when the poppies aren’t in bloom. Ideally, visitors would come by from mid-February through mid-May, which is the best season to catch a glimpse of golden hillsides before the heat of the Mojave Desert settles over Lancaster in early spring and runs through to the fall.

The Golden Poppy, belonging to the Papaveraceae family, grows wild throughout California, and became the state flower in 1903. Every year April 6 is California Poppy Day, and May 13-18 is Poppy Week. The Festival occurs in the month of April to commemorate Poppy Day, and is a helpful reminder as to why California is referred to as The Golden State of the United States. Its flower, sunshine, and residents are golden—they collectively light up wherever they are placed and illuminate the best attributes of the world around them. Lancaster, similarly, shines as a golden community in the state.
