A rather small city in the Los Angeles area, Maywood, California ranks the biggest in population density. It’s not only the biggest in the Los Angeles area. It’s also the biggest in the state of California. Yet, in actual square miles, Maywood is but 1.18. It is, in fact, the third smallest incorporated city in Los Angeles County. And historically, back in the later 1700’s, it was birthed on a cow pasture.

Maywood has since had some growth in people too. One of them was this enterprising young lady named, wouldn’t you guess, May Wood. In 1919, May Wood, led the development of the area, which had grown ranch-size, into house tracts. Here was the onset of Maywood’s people boom. Then, in 1924, Maywood’s residents voted to incorporate it. It was a festive event, and a forerunner to the yearly Maywood festival today. Huge numbers turned out for the city’s dedication, May Wood, its founder amongst them.
More homes sprouted about town, churches and stores. Next, there was a movie theater. Wow! Now, Maywood had grown to about 1,000 residents. By the 1930’s, Maywood had a park meadow that turned into a baseball field. And by the 1950’s Maywood City, and its Maywood Park was clearly on the map as a baseball association adopted it as its headquarters.

Schools were important to the community too. It was important to keep up with growing industry. The Chrysler Corporation opened an assembly plant in Maywood, and thrived being known as the “Los Angeles” Plant. Willys-Overland became the 2nd automobile manufacturer in the area, employing over 900 people. Then, Lockheed Aircraft Corporation got a foothold in the area with the rise of the 2nd World War, and the manufacture of aircraft bombers. It meant more and more people, learning more and more skills.
