“What do you want to be when you grow up?” is a question kids hear over and over and often have no idea how to answer. Savvy parents will help their kids begin formulating a career or college path early by encouraging volunteer work, providing adult mentorship, discussing aptitudes and interests with their children, and arranging for tutoring in Severn to help them do well in school. Center of Applied Technology North (CATN) in Severn, Maryland, takes that process one step further. The school takes an innovative approach to helping their students flesh out possible career and/or college paths by making these students both career-ready and college-ready.
Tons of Options
CATN’s career preparation path allows students to explore various careers without commitment. This helps in two ways: it can give a student training and certifications or state licenses necessary to land a high-wage job early, but it can also give that student insight into selecting a college and a college major for further study and education. Many of CATN’s programs earn credits that can be transferred to college or trade school.
The program starts with summer camp in grades 6 through 8. Grades 9 and 10 are devoted to career exploration, and each semester, students explore four career programs. Students can also participate in overview programs that expose them to all twenty-two programs offered at CATN. The remaining high school years focus on developing job skills and obtaining job experience.
CATN is aligned with Maryland’s Career Technology Education (CTE) programs: statewide model programs that prepare high school students to live and work in the global economy. Programs available at CATN cover a wide variety of industries, including arts, media, and communication; construction and development; consumer services, hospitality, and tourism; environmental, agriculture, and natural resources; health and biosciences; information technology; manufacturing, engineering, and technology; and transportation technology.
Leadership
CATN staff members know that job skills are not all that matters. That’s why they invest a considerable amount of time into helping students with the “soft skills”: interviewing techniques, appropriate work habits, leadership skills, and healthy interpersonal relationships. Students get assistance in preparing their resume and portfolio so that they make a good impression on potential employers and college counselors.
Business Hub
Severn is part of Anne Arundel County, which is a major hub of commerce and development in the United States. There are almost 54,000 businesses and an excellent multi-modal transportation system serving the whole county. Students who graduate from CATN are poised to join a thriving economy in their very backyard if that is their goal.
CATN is providing teens with training needed to be a successful part of the 21st century workforce. With the assistance of a Severn tutor, students can accommodate those programs while still taking necessary coursework, including honors and AP classes, to graduate and excel in college, if that is their chosen path.

Families share goals and scheduling preferences through a short intake. That information becomes a learner profile. Grade Potential then introduces your profile to a professional independent tutor whose background aligns. Once the tutor accepts, you’re introduced directly and sessions can begin.
Our packages are highly customizable based on your budget, preferred session cadence, time frame, location, and a few other factors. You’ll be presented with clear pricing before you begin. We support families in choosing the session length and cadence that works best for their individual situation; no hard sales tactics and no obligation to purchase a long-term package.
Typically within 2-3 business days, depending on subject, location, and schedule availability. Urgent timelines are noted in your profile so introductions prioritize your timing.
