About Towson

Towson University in Towson, Maryland, is a college for the whole community, not just the 20,000 enrolled students. The university, founded in 1866 specifically to train teachers, provides a wealth of resources for residents of Towson and the greater Baltimore area.

Arts and Culture
TU hosts more than 200 student and professional performances each year, including theater, jazz, choral arts, opera, and ensembles. Community members can watch dance performances—or even sign up for workshops or year-round classes themselves. The university rotates a wide variety of art exhibits through four separate galleries and offers year-round art classes at TU’s Community Art Center.

Sports
During summer, TU offers summer camps for almost a dozen sports, from lacrosse to football to soccer and every sport in between. Young athletes focus on skill development, strength and conditioning, and performance nutrition.

Education
TU invites educators from all over to come learn more about the process of educating. The university has resources for professional, personal, and curricular development. One example of TU’s commitment is the Towson University Center for STEM Excellence, an outreach program that enhances science learning at Maryland’s elementary, middle, and high schools.

Health
The university provides services in occupational therapy, drug abuse prevention, speech therapy, hearing and balance, and wellness. As an example, one TU program teaches students to interact with adults on the autism spectrum while gaining more insight into the societal issues for people with autism.

Professional Development
TU offers a whole line-up of professional certifications and leadership programs that bridge skill gaps, re-train employees for jobs in high-growth industries, and prepare people to step into and excel at leadership roles.

Kids
TU feels like a playground to kids from the region.
