About Arnold
The community of Arnold is like many other small, charming communities in Maryland. And, Arnold’s parks are like many other suburban parks that dot the state. One unique element of Arnold Park, however, is the presence of the Wilmer Stone Oak—Maryland’s state tree. At one hundred twenty-eight feet tall and over two hundred years old, the oak sits on a hillside at the park, silently guarding the children who play on the playgrounds, athletes who play in teams on the fields, and other visitors enjoying the park.
Oak trees tend to grow shaped by the environment in which they live. This means that weather will severely impact the way an oak grows; if it’s constantly windy, an oak will grow in different twisting shapes and formations, the direction of the trunk and branches shaped by years of storms and strong winds. The Wilmer Stone Oak is no exception to this pattern. Its trunk is doubled over—a local reporter in Arnold referred to it looking like a “bent over old man”—and its shape is that of a Y, with branches that move horizontally over the surrounding poplars, black locust, and maple trees that also dot the park. Still, this tree has stood for over two hundred years, its shape continually twisted in age, but not likely to fall over any time soon.
Generally, oak trees grow in hardy conditions. They thrive in multiple regions across the United States, and can survive in dry, hot climates and humid climates too. They can grow in yards, in the wild, and along city streets. Part of the reason why oaks can live as long as they can and grow as large as they do is because of a root system that entrenches itself deeply in the soil. In fact, oak roots can cause sidewalks to buckle and crack, and in some cities, hundreds of thousands of dollars go into extra upkeep of walkways thanks to competing oak roots. Thick bark, branches, and trunks make the oaks withstand all manner of environmental ups and downs.
The lesson of the Wilmer Stone Oak is the old adage: learn to bend, but not break. Students subject to the difficulties of academia, struggling grades, and faltering self-confidence should be inspired by the subject of the oak tree. Tutors are there to show the students of Arnold how to weather the ups and downs, and provide expertise to show them how to grow with the hardships and not break underneath them. Tutoring helps shape the individual student into one that eventually results in academic success.
