    About Middle River

East of Rosedale and north of Chesapeake Bay, Middle River, Maryland is a suburb of Baltimore about 10 miles east of the downtown area. Historians estimate that fully half of the Europeans who made the arduous journey across the Atlantic to North America between 1607 and 1776 were indentured servants. An indentured servant basically signed away part of his or her life to an employer for a fixed period, usually in increments of five years. In exchange for this labor an immigrant would be provided passage to America and granted freedom, and often land, after the subscribed period of their indenture was over. This institution attracted Detmar and Catherine Stansbury, with their small son Tobias, to sign over their lives to Thomas Bradley when they arrived in Maryland from Holland in 1658. Detmar and his family most probably worked as farmers on a tobacco plantation before gaining their freedom. While no records indicate Detmar ever owned land, history does record that his son Tobias, only nineteen at the time, acquired 100 acres of land near Bear Creek, just south of what is now Middle River, in 1671. Over his life he owned land throughout Baltimore County between Back River and Gunpowder River, including tracts in Middle River. He passed on his land to his three sons with the Stansbury name quite well known in the area throughout history.

Today, visitors can tour the Ballestone-Stansbury House in Essex, on land originally owned by Tobias’s son Thomas. Thomas built a farmhouse which no longer stands in 1725 while later generations of the Stansbury family built the current house in the early 1800’s. A small farm community for most of its existence, Middle River expanded in the 1930’s with the building of “Aero Acres,” a housing community for the Martin Aerospace Company which established its headquarters in Middle River in 1928. An early pioneer in aircraft manufacturing, Glenn L. Martin moved his company to Middle River to build and test both aircraft and aerospace designs. Martin would later merge with the Marietta Company in 1961 and again with Lockheed in 1995. Lockheed-Martin still has a presence with two facilities in the area. The Martin State Airport which takes up the southern section of Middle River was named after Martin.

It’s likely that a Middle River tutor will be able to keep you ahead of the academic curve so you can take some time away from the books to enjoy the attractions and amenities in this part of Maryland. Founded in 1990, the Glenn L. Martin Maryland Aviation Museum at the Martin Airport in Middle River features historical displays, artifacts, photographs and documents to chronicle the history of aviation in Maryland. In coordination with the U.S. Army and Navy, the museum displays a variety of aircraft including a Bell-Huey helicopter, an A-7 Corsair attack jet and a World War II era Beechcraft Model 18 which was used for transport and light bombing in the Pacific theater of the war.

For art lovers, it’s only a short trip south into Baltimore to visit the Baltimore Museum of Art. Founded in 1914, the museum’s collections range from ancient to cutting edge contemporary art. The museum houses one of the finest collections of American art in the world with famous paintings, prints, drawings and photographs representing the greatest American geniuses such as Thomas Hart Benton, Georgia O’Keefe, Man Ray and Alfred Stiglitz. French impressionist and post-impressionist art can be viewed in the Cone Collection, put together by socialite sisters Claribel and Etta Cone who lived at the turn of the 20th century and hobnobbed with the likes of American writer Gertrude Stein. The collection includes works by Cezanne, Van Gogh and Picasso.
