    About Silver Spring

Directly north of Washington D.C., Silver Spring is a fun-loving community in Maryland, with a lot to offer residents and tourists alike. Beautiful parks and a rich history within the state of Maryland are two reasons why families love living here. Its close proximity to Washington D.C. makes Silver Spring a great commuter town for those who want to live in a neighboring community to our nation’s capital city.

Silver Spring takes its name in a very obvious way. A spring discovered in this area back in the mid 1800s contained flecks of silver, and shined in the sunlight. Though the original spring is no more, a famous landmark called Acorn Park is exactly where the spring used to be.

Acorn Park is a landmark in Silver Spring that features what appears to be a very large acorn. Upon closer examination, you’ll find that it is just a gazebo that looks like an upside down acorn. Acorn Park is located near the downtown area of Silver Spring. Other park features include several park benches, along with a nymph statue of Greek origin.

When it comes to the Silver Spring parks and recreational facilities, several high quality areas are open to residents and tourists daily. A quiet local park, Rock Creek Park provides beautiful nature trails as well as many areas for picnicking. Sligo Creek Park is where you’ll want to go if you’re looking for a great place to play tennis. With playgrounds available for smaller children, Sligo Creek Park also has biking trails for the bike enthusiast. If you’re looking for a larger network of trails for everything from horseback riding to trail running, Northwest Branch Park is where you’ll want to be.

With various festivals and community events happening throughout the year, there is something for everyone in Silver Spring. From film festivals to lectures and conferences, Silver Spring is a very active community in a large range of fields and interests. A local landmark, The Fillmore is a place that many local families like to go for live music and entertainment. The Fillmore also brings in a fair amount of tourists from the rest of the state, as well as from around the nation.

The Montgomery County Public School system serves the entire county, including Silver Spring. With several high quality options, families like having the choice for where their children will be educated. Several private schools are also available to residents of Silver Spring. For students that need some one-on-one help, local Silver Spring tutors are available to help get them back on track in a wide variety of subjects.
