About Germantown
Located within the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, Germantown is a historic city with a lot to offer both residents and tourists alike. One of the largest cities in the state of Maryland, Germantown still maintains a small-town feel, and that’s why many of its residents love to call it home. Because of its location not too far from the capital of the United States, many government officials and other government workers live in Germantown and commute to Washington D.C. every day for work.
Germantown has a very interesting organizational structure that makes it a unique place to live. Back in its early days, city planners had divided the city up into several distinct districts and neighborhoods. Each district and neighborhood has different amenities to offer, and different styles as well. When it comes to the various districts, the downtown district has a lot to offer when it comes to tourism and industry. This is really the hub of activity in Germantown, and includes the movie theatre, the Black Rock Arts Center, the Germantown Public Library, and other public buildings and offices. The local transit center provides many lines of transportation to surrounding neighborhoods and cities, including Washington D.C., and is a popular option for commuters.
When it comes to arts and culture, Germantown boasts a number of high quality facilities to cater to the art community. The Black Rock Center for the Arts hosts a number of local music festivals and cultural events, and brings in a lot of people from all around the country every year. For the avid sports fan, the Maryland SoccerPlex hosts many local soccer matches and brings in fans from across the nation.
Interestingly enough, Germantown had no schools until after the Civil War was over. Before that time, children were taught in homes, and homeschooling was a popular method of education. The late 1800s brought a small schoolhouse to Germantown, and it housed students from elementary age through high school age. Nowadays, there are plenty of options when it comes to schools in the area. Served by the Montgomery County Public School District, Germantown students have access to over a dozen public elementary schools, a handful of middle schools, and two high schools, all of which are high quality. There are several local private schools and charter schools as well. For students of any level that need extra help, local Germantown tutors are available for hire. These local tutors meet one-on-one with local students to help them reach their educational goals.
