    About Essex

Those who live in the city will sometimes find themselves yearning for fresh open spaces, dreaming of tending to their own garden. In 1909 the people of Baltimore were looking for their rural home out of the city. The Taylor Land Company purchased the land to sell to residents in Baltimore. Their land sat just outside Baltimore city limits. By 1910, the first general store was built in Essex by Henry Guttenberger. Only a year later, the land was donated to Essex by the Taylor Land Company for Methodist and St. John’s Lutheran churches. When Essex began to establish, it started as just ten blocks. Essex did not stop at ten blocks. When the Glenn L Martin Company came into the area, the town saw rapid growth. Other companies were also involved with giving more job opportunities and expanding the city during World War II.

It is still possible to travel back in time and relive the farmhouse life of Essex. The Ballestone Mansion still remains and is open to visitors. The mansion's architecture gives a timeless charm that represents the area's history. Tall white pillars line the front with a two story deck. Red brick is built up the side of the mansion and three chimney stacks across the home. Ballestone Mansion also is a site for civil war reenactment is held each year along with other seasonal events. Each December the mansion is dolled up for the holidays and tours are given. Ballestone property has been passed along through several owners whose homes no longer remain. Tax records show the earliest renovations made to the current farmhouse was in 1813. Unfortunately, for a period of time, the farm home was abandoned and vandalized. Luckily, the home was purchased and restoration began in 1974. A tutor in your area and help you achieve the grades you want. Now the Ballestone House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for it being one of the few remaining farmhouses in the area.

During World War II the area experienced an increase of employment which let the city grow rapidly. During the war, Glenn L Martin Company peaked at more than 53,000 workers. Appropriate for the time, Glenn L. Martin was an aircraft and aerospace company. During the war, they produced important aircraft for the defense of the United States. Eastern Rolling Mill opened in 1919 also provided jobs for Essex’s citizens. They produced carbon sheet steel at the head of the Black River. Only a few years after the war, the large companies saw the area dwindle. This caused both Glenn L Martin and Eastern Rolling Mill to make merges. Glenn L. Martin is now owned and operated by Lockheed Martin while after a few mergers, Eastern Rolling Mill shut down in the late 1990s. Although the area experienced much growth, they still offer outdoor getaways it was once meant for. Many parks are throughout the area so people in the city have a close getaway.
