It’s obvious that families in Severna Park, Maryland, enjoy staying active. A glance at the community events calendar proves it: during any week, one can find plays, concerts, or sporting or food events to attend. These are sponsored by community groups, schools, churches, and the dozens of Severna Park neighborhoods and businesses.
Community Olympics
In this multi-week event, the tables are turned: adults living in the neighborhoods of Whitehurst, Fair Oaks, Oakleigh Forest, and Cape Arthur/North Cape Arthur compete in various sporting events—while their kids cheer them on. About fifty team captains and seven community representatives plan and organize competitions in biking, swimming, kayaking, and softball. The premise behind the event is that since the kids from the various communities go to school together, the adults participating in the Community Olympics can get to know one another, too.
Rock the Park
Summer outdoor concert, anyone? The Severna Park Community Center hosts local bands for outdoor concerts when the weather is at its balmy finest. Families can bring lawn chairs and just enjoy music from local bands. Food and refreshments are available for purchase.
Mardi Gras Celebration
Sponsored by the Severna Park Kiwanis, the celebration features music, great food, and live and silent auctions. Profits support scholarships, local youth programs, and local non-profit organizations.
4th of July Parade
Severna’s Independence Day parade oozes of old-fashioned charm and features bands, music groups, and floats decorated to the hilt by community groups and businesses.
Golf Tournament
An annual golf tournament is held at Chartwell Golf & Country Club. The always-sold-out event includes breakfast, an awards luncheon, and all kinds of prizes.
Kinder Farm Park
Just outside of Severna Park, Kinder Farm Park is a favorite destination for families. Attractions include a huge “Big Kinder” playground as well as a variety of farm animals. There’s a paved 2.8-mile trail for walking, jogging, or biking.
B&A Trail
Serious adventurists will want to check out the Baltimore and Annapolis Trail, which starts in Glen Burnie, Maryland, and ends up in Annapolis, passing through Severna Park on the way. Popular with the athletically inclined, the trail follows a former rail line. Refreshments are available at The Big Bean and Froyo House.
Severna Park Lanes/Severna Park Golf Center
If the weather isn’t cooperating, there are plenty of bumper bowling lanes available at Severna Park Lanes. Nighttime bowling with special lighting is also a blast for teens. A round of miniature golf at Severna Park Golf Center is loads of fun as well.
Donut Shack
If all that activity has built up a hunger, stop in at the Donut Shack—a feast for the eyes and the stomach. The Donut Shack is also a sweet place for Severna Park tutors to meet their students for an energetic session of tutoring in Severna Park.
