    About Crofton

Crofton has always maintained a relatively low profile despite having been previously listed in Money magazines “100 Best Places to Live.” Crofton is still considered as one of the best cities to reside in, in the United States due to it’s excellent amenities, pleasant climate, and high performing school system. Crofton tutors are amused that in spite of all of these merits, that Crofton is best known for an incident that took place in 2002.

Crofton recently featured in many news articles due to a fish incident that sparked a national discussion about “invasive species”. Crofton tutors describe an invasive species as being some kind of life form, whether it is plant life, or some type of fungus, or animal that is not native to the location in which it is found. Furthermore the appearance of this species in this alien environment upsets the local ecosystem, the repercussions of which can irreversibly damage the native environment or in extreme cases human welfare. There are however differing views on the criteria for an ‘invasive’ species between different researchers. For example the European Union terms “invasive species” more specifically as “invasive alien species”, and specify that they are “species” outside of their natural distribution area and that the presence of these “species” threaten biological diversity.

According to Crofton tutors not all introduced species are necessarily deemed invasive. Non-Indigenous species from another climate or vicinity outside of their natural distribution area can be introduced and there be little to no adverse effects. Introduction of certain species can, on the opposite side of the spectrum, be detrimental to a habitat. In Crofton a northern snakeshead fish was found in a small local pond. A northern snakehead’s natural environment is usually Asia. They are commonly found in China, North and South Korea and even Russia. The fish have a bad reputation for being highly rapacious and invasive. They are big fish usually about three feet in length in adulthood, and have large canines on their lower jaw. They thrive in a freshwater environment and have an astonishing capability to live for an extended period of time outside of the water. They are very resilient and resourceful; young northern snakehead’s can even traverse over land to a nearby body of water.

In Crofton, in order to eliminate the unwanted visitors, the ponds where the fish were found were heavily dosed with the drug rotenone, an odorless broad-spectrum pesticide that has been used for hundreds of years to poison fish and other insects. Crofton tutors confirm that before the drug was isolated from rotenone-containing plants, the plants themselves were used and placed into the water.
