About Millford Mill
West of Pikesville and about 20 miles northwest of Baltimore, Milford Mill is a suburb in Baltimore County. The area includes Hebbville and Windsor Mill. Early English settlers found ideal conditions for raising a variety of crops when they established a colony in Maryland in the 1630’s. First grown by Native Americans, corn and tobacco became popular favorites of Maryland farmers. Not surprisingly, grist mills grew up throughout the colony on virtually every river and creek. A grist mill uses water to power a wheel which turns a grinding mechanism for pulverizing grain into flour. The first mention of Milford Mill in Maryland history appears in 1723 with the records of Richard Gist who built a mill he named Milford on Gwynn’s Falls, a 25-mile stream which runs through the northern part of Milford. The Milford Milling Company went through many different owners over the years. In 1896, an assessment of the property indicated the mill and its equipment were worth $4,000. It came with five horses, a cow and a wagon. The first photograph of the mill was taken in 1903 and another in 1925. In 1959, students from the local high school did an archaeological dig in the area where the mill had once been, uncovering an iron turbine spinner. The first mention of Windsor Mill was in 1789 when a diary entry notes that a mill had recently burned and been rebuilt on the west bank of Gwynn’s Falls. While quite prosperous in the late 18th century, the mill seems to have gone out of existence in the 1800’s. Today, little of the town’s mill history remains as Milford Mill is largely a bedroom community for the larger Baltimore metropolitan area.
It’s likely that a Milford Mill tutor will keep you ahead of the academic curve so you can take time to enjoy the attractions and amenities of the Baltimore metropolitan area. Less than eight miles from Milord Mill, the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore is 135 acres with animals from all over the world. As with Sudbrook Park, Frederick Law Olmstead had a hand in the design of the zoo and his signature curved roads connect different segments of the zoo. The largest section of the zoo is dedicated to an “African Journey” with habitats for giraffes, zebras, chimpanzees and, of course, lions. The “Maryland Wilderness” features natural native settings such as bogs, streams, caves and meadows. “Polar Bear Watch” is highlighted by Anoki, a 900-pound female bear who lives within an area that is also home to the arctic fox, raven and snowy owl.
Patapsco Valley State Park, just a mile or two south of Milford Mill, has a wealth of recreational opportunities. The park features several miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails with the longest being the 2.3-mile Grist Mill Trail. The river provides a great place for tubing, paddling, swimming and fishing. The park is also home to historic sites such as the Thomas Viaduct, the world’s oldest multiple arched stone bridge built in 1835. A pedestrian only swinging bridge spans the river near the Avalon area of the park.
Due east from Milford Mill, historic Pimlico Race Course, opened in 1870, is host to the annual Preakness Stakes, the second race in the American Triple Crown of horse racing sandwiched between the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes. Named after the colt Preakness who was one of the finest horses on the grounds in the 1870’s, the race has featured some of the finest thoroughbred athletes in history including Triple Crown winners Man of War, Secretariat and most recently American Pharoah.
