    About Glen Burnie

Thirteen miles south from Baltimore, Glen Burnie, Maryland is a large suburb in Anne Arundel County. Elias Glenn, a U.S. attorney for the district of Maryland, came to the area in 1812. He was nominated for the position by President James Madison and served until 1824 when he ascended to the bench as a judge for the U.S. District Court. He retired in 1836 but not before he administered the oath of office to new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Roger Taney. Taney became famous, or maybe infamous, for his decision in the Dred Scott case in which he ruled that Congress had no right to restrict the spread of slavery, a decision which had dire implications for the future. Along with his law career, Glenn was busy with the property outside of Baltimore which he named Glennsburne. Upon his death in 1846, Glenn passed on his land to his grandson William Wilkins Glenn who purchased the Curtis Creek Mining, Furnace and Manufacturing Company which prospered throughout the 19th century, mostly by mining local iron ore and smelting it into refined iron at its plant on the southern shore of Furnace Creek (named such because of the furnaces used to smelt iron). The name of the town eventually evolved to Glen Burnie in the 1930’s. Today, the town has several major roadways which connect it to Annapolis to the south and Baltimore in the north. In fact, the automobile is king in Glen Burnie which recently acquired the nickname “Chrome City” because of the number of car dealerships in the area.

It’s likely a Glen Burnie tutor will be able to get you caught up on your toughest academic subjects so you can enjoy the attractions and amenities in Glen Burnie and the greater Baltimore region. For something a little different, the 8th Avenue Flea Market on, go figure, 8th Ave. in Glen Burnie offers a cornucopia of antiques, electronics, collectibles and jewelry as well as a crab shack where visitors can gorge on fresh seafood or take it away to cook another day. Pony rides for the youngsters complete the experience at the market which is open on Saturdays and Sundays.

Designated a national park in 1925, Fort McHenry should be known to all Americans as the site where Francis Scott Key composed the National Anthem at the height of the British bombardment of the fort during the War of 1812. It’s just a short drive north from Glen Burnie to the site on the shores of the Patapsco River in Baltimore. A prominent destination for both Baltimore residents and tourists alike, the fort is accessible by water taxi where visitors can examine commander’s quarters, guard house and powder magazine. The restored flag which flew over the fort on that inspirational night in 1814 can still be viewed.

Right next to Fort McHenry, Baltimore’s Inner Harbor offers museums, cultural centers, restaurants and exciting night life. The National Aquarium on the harbor features several exhibits including the multi-story Atlantic Coral Reef, Tropical Rain Forest and Australia: Wild Extremes. The aquarium, opened in 1981, houses several types of sharks, bottlenose dolphins and a multitude of freshwater and ocean species such as clownfish, triggerfish and jellyfish. It’s also home to animals such as birds, flying foxes, turtles, snakes and various amphibians.
