Wyandotte, a small city outside of Detroit, stands in the impressive shadow of Motor City, known at one time for car and other industrial manufacturing practices. Wyandotte, for several decades, participated in this culture of industry, creating a variety of household goods, such as appliances, kitchen ware, automobile parts, and others. What you may not associate with American industry, however, is the manufacturing of toys. Wyandotte’s All Metal Products Company was a participant in this practice of manufacturing, standing equal to Detroit’s industriousness for several years.
All Metal Products Company was founded in 1920 as a toy manufacturer. All Metal Products produced inexpensive pressed metal toys under the Wyandotte brand name, and was the largest manufacturer of toy guns in the US for several decades in the 20th century. Most children’s toys today are made of plastic, break easily, and are cheaply-made. By contrast, the company’s slogan was “Wyandotte Toys are Good and Safe.” In order to keep costs and prices low, All Metal Products used scrap and surplus raw materials whenever possible, often manufacturing their toys from scrap metal obtained from local auto factories. In this way, waste did not burden the greater Detroit area, which would need areas designated for junk metal as a byproduct of the automobile industry. All Metal Products saw a market and process by which waste could be avoided.
Within a few decades of its founding, All Metal Products moved its headquarters to Ohio, hoping to take advantage of the steel industry as a way to continue manufacturing with scrap metal. Sadly, as toy manufacturing practices changed, All Metal Products went out of business in the 1950s. Today, though, All Metal Products toys are considered collectible items, highly valued if they are in good condition with the original paint still intact. They represent another time in America, before global changes to industry, when the hard work of people living in cities like Wyandotte found ways to provide goods to a population while avoiding waste at the same time.
Like the All Metal Products Company, academic success relies on innovation and creative thinking to provide services to struggling students. Grade Potential tutors in Wyandotte are trained and equipped to work with what is available, just like the company bosses of All Metal Products worked with the scrap metal available to them to provide toys to eager children. The ingenuity and hard work of the people who manufactured these toys is applied by tutors working with students to turn bad grades around, looking to create lasting and valuable changes.
