    About Detroit

Detroit Michigan is a colorful city, vibrant and pulsing with a lot to do. Detroit also happens to be a city rich in history, full of historical buildings and places. Some of these places may even come up when you’re meeting with your Detroit tutor. Perhaps one of the most famous places in Detroit is Hitsville U.S.A., a historical museum dedication to the preservation of Motown music and memorabilia.

Hitsville U.S.A. was established by Berry Gordy in 1959, and was a major beacon for Motown artists of the time. It had a short but well-known life, and was converted to a museum in 1985 by Esther Gordy Edwards.

But was exactly is Motown, and why was it such a big deal. Motown, in many ways, was the music that blended together the racial divide. It bridged the gap between young and old, black and white, in a way that no other music had. Groups like the Temptations, Diana Ross and the Supremes, and Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 created music unlike any other, and the Motown label went down in history.

Berry Gordy founded the label, and came up with the name from the city of Detroit’s nick name, Motor City. He replaced city with town, and came up with Motown. His label would go on to become the most successful independently owned record label in history, as well as the most successful business owned by an African American. Gordy employed principles he had learned while working at the Lincoln-Mercury manufacturing plant on the assembly line. He figured if this company could take metal frames and turn them into luxury cars he could take every day artists and turn them into stars. He employed a type of quality control, with producers sitting down every week and going through the recordings, critiquing and praising different songs. Berry Gordy did something right because by the 80’s and 90’s every major artist and group that had signed with him had been inducted in the hall of fame, followed by his own induction in 1988.

Berry Gordy managed to achieve the impossible in a time when everyone that he was crazy. He turned an $800 loan from family into one of the most successful and impacting record labels ever created, and his music started a social movement that would go down in history.

With hard work and perseverance anything is possible, so make sure to continue your sessions with your Detroit tutor, and never let anyone tell you that you can’t do something.
