    About Macomb

Current resident of Macomb Township is the multiple award-winning ‘rapper’ Eminem. In 2002 Eminem released a movie entitled “8 Mile” that achieved much critical acclaim and box office success. The title of the film refers to a stretch of highway running between Macomb County and Wayne County that have drastically different racial makeup. The story behind the film mirrors that of Eminem’s own plight to be taken seriously as a hip-hop artist, in a predominantly African-American genre. In the film, Eminem lives in a trailer park in nearby Warren, Michigan, and his name is Jimmy “B-Rabbit” Smith Jr. According to Macomb tutors much of the movie was actually filmed on site in the neighborhoods of Detroit.

Eminem was fascinated by story telling from a young age and before he ‘found’ hip-hop he had entertained a future as a comic-book artist. Eminem suffered from a great deal of upheaval in his childhood years, moving between many homes and staying with relatives. It was one of his relatives, (his mother’s step brother) who mentored Eminem at the time when he was first introduced to the genre of hip-hop. At school he teamed up with his friend Mike Ruby and they started using the names “Manix” and “M&M”. “M&M” referred to Marshall Mathers, Eminem’s legal name, and “M&M” evolved into “Eminem” as we know him today. Eminem would play his music loudly and began to write his own songs whenever he was left alone, often when his mother went out to play Bingo. Eminem had some practice attending freestyle rap battles at neighboring schools and eventually he cut his teeth at the “Hip-Hop Shop” on West 7 Mile. His reputation grew and soon he was brought in under the wing of accomplished acts and included in their line-ups. Meanwhile to earn a living he worked washing dishes and struggled to bring up his daughter, Hallie, with his partner Kim Scott. The struggle that he went through was clear in his writing and lyrics and as more negative incidents occurred his lyrics captured the imagination of those facing the same struggles and feeling the same emotions. According to Macomb tutors, it was at this point he resonated with his audience and his popularity in the main stream really took off.

Overall Eminem sold the most records of any artist in the U.S. in the 2000s, incredibly he sold so many millions of albums globally that he is one of the world’s best –selling artists. Undoubtedly he could afford now to live anywhere in the world from a beautiful remote beach to a fancy downtown Manhattan loft; which makes Macomb tutors and residents alike proud that he continues to stay true to his roots and reside close to where he grew up.
