Dallas is a thriving city located in Northeastern Texas. With a booming economy, diverse and industrious workforce, and a history steeped in the American love of cotton and oil, Dallas has shown itself a persistent player in the United States politics and economic development. But Dallas isn’t only about money and wealth—it’s also about charity. One of the United States’ most sizeable charities was founded in Dallas in 1982, recognizable now the world over for its pink ribbons. The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (now known as Susan G. Komen for the Cure) has been responsible for significant progress in the screening, diagnosis, and treatment of breast cancer in the United States.
Between its inception and 2010, Komen has donated over 1.5 billion dollars for breast cancer education, research, and advocacy. Komen’s influence has reached over 50 other countries, not just its central location in Dallas, and claims more than 100,000 volunteers working for its world-wide affiliates. Their slogan, “It all started with a promise” rings as true today as it did in 1982.
Susan G. Komen was diagnosed with breast cancer in her early 30s in 1980. She lived a short time, and during treatment, her sister, Nancy Goodman Brinker, promised she would spend the rest of her life trying to put an end to breast cancer. Brinker was convinced that her sister’s fate would not have been so tragic if better screenings and preventative measures were in place to detect the early stages of breast cancer. She made it her life’s work to make sure other women would have greater chances at beating breast cancer if the right resources were presented to them early on.
Komen’s mission statement, taken from its website, is as follows: “save lives by meeting the most critical needs in our communities and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer.” Enacting this mission statement has taken a variety of forms, from lobbying for insurance reform to cover breast cancer screening and early detection, to funding clinical research trials seeking to eradicate cancer occurrence.
Breast cancer is still the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States, but with more attention to this issue, the more likely early detection can occur. Grade Potential tutors in Dallas also seek early detection and early help to truly aid the clients they tutor. The sooner someone comes in, we have seen, the sooner they are able to get back on track and achieve the academic success they desire. Komen’s charity model and emphasis on early diagnosis, preventative educational strategies for women around the world has helped improve the outlook for many who are affected by breast cancer. Similarly, tutors are there to correctly assess and then treat individual students who reside within Dallas city limits, taking a cue from the hard work and efforts put in by Komen over three decades ago.
