Science Standards And Curriculums

Middle School Science

Houston Independent School District (HISD) follows the state-mandated Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards for science. The science concepts within each grade level build on those before it, creating an organic pathway from one grade to the next. In Houston middle schools, grades 6 through 8 focus on scientific and engineering practices; matter, force, motion, and energy; earth and space; and organisms and environments. 8th grade students take the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) science exam.

High School Science

Texas requires high school students to earn three science credits to graduate, but four credits to graduate with the Distinguished Level of Achievement (DLA). Biology and either Chemistry or Physics are mandatory for completing both paths. Through HISD’s School Choice lottery system, students can apply to attend a STEM-speciality high school, such as Energy Institute High School. All high school students must pass the STAAR Biology End-of-Course (EOC) exam to graduate, too.

College Science

Houston is a major hub for research and medicine, and students attending institutions such as the University of Houston, Rice University, and UTHealth Houston can pursue a variety of majors that prepare them for a science or STEM-based career.
