Alief, Texas sits just outside the city perimeter of Houston and has a long history of farming, industry, and increasing numbers of residents since the late nineteenth century. This has not always been the case, however. In fact, Alief was nearly wiped off the map in 1899 thanks to a massive flood that damaged much of the city. A hurricane the following year destroyed much of the town’s crops, leaving Alief comprised of six families after 24 of the original 30 families were forced to relocate.
Prior to the flood and hurricane, Alief produced corn and cotton crops. The fields that produced these goods were decimated beyond repair, and it appeared Alief would fade into obscurity as a result of the extreme weather. With the town so severely reduced in number, wild animals openly roamed during the day, including wolves. Luckily, Jacamiah Seaman Daugherty, one of the community’s original founders, had an idea.
Rather than go back, replant corn and cotton, and ultimately risk their future destruction during future floods and storms, Daugherty brainstormed a new crop for Alief: rice. Rice thrives on flood plains, given by the fact that it grows in shallow water and sandy soil. Daugherty’s idea proved to be a success, and within a few years, Alief was thriving again with a new cash crop. Rice brought families back to the region, and by the turn of the century, immigrants from Germany had also joined the town’s population. Alief citizens learned to navigate the nature of living on a flood plain, formed the Harris County Flood Control District, and were able to survive future storms that passed through the Houston area.
Today, Alief is still thriving and still enjoying a steady increase of population as each year passes. Drawn to its good economy and diversified job opportunities, people in Alief make the community a stable and dependable place to live.
The flood and storms of the late nineteenth century showed Alief that new plans would need to be made in order for the city to bounce back after the extensive damage to corn and cotton. The innovative spirit of Daugherty helped save the town. Similarly, Grade Potential tutors in Alief are skilled at coming up with new plans and new methods for their clients to achieve academic success. The setbacks that plague students in the form of suffering grades and difficulty in the classroom can be mitigated by the positive influence of tutors to turn things around and, if necessary, start over.

Our packages are highly customizable based on your budget, preferred session cadence, time frame, location, and a few other factors. You’ll be presented with clear pricing before you begin. We support families in choosing the session length and cadence that works best for their individual situation; no hard sales tactics and no obligation to purchase a long-term package.
