Houston Independent School District (HISD) follows the state-mandated Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards. From the moment students enter Kindergarten, they begin learning to read using the Science of Reading curriculum. This curriculum covers phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. In addition, HISD schools are part of the Vocabulary Project initiative, designed to strengthen students’ word knowledge and comprehension.
