The Seattle Public School system (SPS) uses the Amplify Science curriculum in its middle schools. Each science unit is designed around an engaging storyline, placing students into active roles within each one.
For example, in 6th grade, students begin their thermal energy unit as scientists evaluating proposals for heating a school, using what they learn about matter, energy, and temperature. Other physics concepts, such as force, motion, and light waves, are introduced in the same way.
In grade 8, students take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS).
Washington requires high school students to earn three science credits, the first of which is a 9th grade class combining Physics A and Chemistry A. The physics section of the class focuses on charge, magnetism, and waves.
Many students then take the second half of both subjects (Physics B and Chemistry B) in their 11th grade year. The physics section of this class examines the principles of mechanics. Students can also choose to take an AP Physics class.
In 11th grade, students take the WCAS to assess their science knowledge before they graduate.
Students attending Seattle-based colleges and universities have access to a diverse group of physics programs. The University of Washington, for example, was ranked 10th in the nation for its physics program in 2026. Seattle University offers active, hands-on research opportunities.
The Seattle College trio (Seattle Central College, South Seattle College, and North Seattle College) works with the city of Seattle and SPS on an initiative called Seattle Promise, providing high school graduates up to two years of tuition-free education at one of the three colleges.
