Throughout New York City Public Schools (NYCPS), middle school instruction lays the groundwork for physics, but not as a separate class. Instead, middle schoolers are taught biology, chemistry, and Earth science as a single integrated course, according to the New York State P-12 Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS).
To satisfy the hands-on requirements, which include foundational physics concepts, NYC middle schools offer curriculum programs such as Amplify Science. In addition, the newly updated Grade 8 Intermediate-Level Science Test (ILS) includes physics concepts as well as other multidisciplinary problem-solving.
NYC requires three science credits to graduate. In many NYC high schools, physics is one of those credits. In addition, students must pass at least one science Regents exam, of which the newly updated 2026 Physics Exam is an option.
If a student wants to earn an Advanced Regents diploma, they must pass two science exams, one in life science and one in physical science. The life sciences exam consists of Living Environment (Biology), while the physical science exam consists of Chemistry, Earth Science, or Physics.
At NYU, Columbia, and across the CUNY system, first-year physics can shape progress in pre-health and STEM tracks. The course is often demanding, and performance can affect the timeline for pre-med or nursing pathways.
Students who enter with a strong foundation in high school physics or who take the Physics 1, Physics 2, Physics C: Mechanics, or Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism AP exams, may adjust better to college-level coursework.
The NYC Physics Regents Exam is generally considered challenging because it requires students to use both complex math formulas and deep scientific concepts.
To pass, students need a scaled score of 65 out of 100. Local school data from 2025 showed that steady practice with past exams and formulas helped many students achieve high passing rates.
In 2021, the College Board discontinued all SAT Subject tests. As a result, the SAT has no standalone physics section. However, the scientific reasoning taught in NYC physics classes runs through the whole exam.
For example, the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section regularly pulls from passages covering experimental design, data interpretation, and evidence-based argument. Students who are comfortable reading graphs and interpreting lab-style summaries may be better prepared for parts of both sections.
Within NYC, SAT participation sits at roughly 22%, alongside broader test-optional admissions policies and CUNY’s decision to stop requiring the SAT. For students targeting selective schools, strong analytical skills taught in most physics classes remain extremely relevant.
The ACT is far less common in NYC, with fewer than 10% of state graduates taking it. Within that 10%, those applying to out-of-state colleges and universities and those who perform better on its format are the most common participants.
The ACT Science section does not test memorized content, but it does contain some physics-focused questions that assess fundamental concepts like forces, motion, electricity, and energy. It also requires students to read a data table, spot trends across experiments, and evaluate conflicting scientific viewpoints under time pressure.
