Why Families & Students Choose Grade Potential

Geometry Tutoring By Subject & Class

Grade Potential connects students and families with geometry tutors across every level, from middle school foundations through college coursework.

Angles & Triangles

Measuring, classifying, and solving for missing values. One of the first major topics in geometry and a foundation for everything that follows.

Rectangles, Parallelograms & Trapezoids

Properties, area, and perimeter of four-sided figures. Shows up consistently across classwork, quizzes, and unit exams.

Pythagorean Theorem

The relationship between the sides of a right triangle. Applied throughout geometry and carried forward into trigonometry and beyond.

Area of Shapes & Polygons

Calculating the space inside triangles, trapezoids, and other polygons. A practical skill tested regularly in geometry coursework.

Circles

Radius, diameter, circumference, arc length, and sector area. A major standalone unit in most geometry courses with its own vocabulary and formulas.

Proofs & Logical Reasoning

Constructing step-by-step arguments for why a geometric statement is true. One of the most distinct and challenging skills introduced in geometry.

Trigonometry (Sine, Cosine, Tangent)

Ratios that describe the relationship between angles and sides in right triangles. Introduced in geometry and built on through precalculus and calculus.

SAT & ACT Geometry Preparation

Angles, area, circles, and coordinate geometry. Geometry concepts appear across both exams and benefit from targeted practice.

Standards And Curriculums

Middle School

NYC middle schoolers build the groundwork for geometry through the city’s math curriculum. Districts select their curriculum from a short, approved list. For students targeting specialized high schools, the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) also tests geometry concepts, so these years matter for more than just classroom grades.

High School

In high school, students follow the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards, with geometry typically taken after Algebra 1. Under NYC Solves, high schools use Illustrative Mathematics. This program focuses on problem-based learning and a transformations-first approach, not traditional two-column proofs. Students need a passing Geometry Regents score toward their math graduation requirement.

College

College coursework builds on geometry through analytical work, proofs, and vector math. Students in STEM, architecture, or education programs will use these skills from the first year on. A strong foundation gives students the confidence to dive into advanced coursework across disciplines.

Math Test Scores

NYC students take state math assessments in grades 3 through 8, then move onto Regents exams in high school. The Geometry Regents was recently updated to align with New York’s current learning standards, which changed the format and emphasis of the exam.

For a standard diploma, students need a scaled score of 65 on a math Regents. An 85 or higher counts toward an Advanced Regents designation. Steady practice through the year, paired with familiarity with the updated format, can help students feel more prepared come exam day.

Entrance Exam Test Scores

SHSAT

For families interested in specialized high schools like Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, or Brooklyn Tech, the SHSAT is part of the admission requirements. The math section includes geometry alongside algebra and word problems. Many students begin preparing for the test a year or more in advance. This is because the test includes material that’s beyond the usual grade-level curriculum.

SAT

Geometry runs throughout the digital SAT math section, showing up in coordinate problems, area and volume, and trigonometry. Given that the math portion counts for half the total score, knowing these concepts well lets students spend their time on problem-solving instead of recalling formulas.

Geometry Programs and Resources

Math Programs

BEAM (Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics) runs free programs for NYC middle schoolers showing promise in math, with a focus on getting more students into advanced coursework. DREAM and other DOE-affiliated programs support students preparing for specialized high school admissions. Availability and eligibility vary, so it’s worth checking each program’s current cycle.

Math Resources

NYSED posts free Regents question samplers and past exams online, which families can use to review at home. The Next Generation Learning Standards also outline what students should know at each level. Past exams are a useful starting point, but they work best alongside steady feedback. A tutor working with your student at home can turn those practice problems into real, focused review week to week.
