Dutch immigrants who arrived here heard the local Lenape people calling this area something that sounded like the word “rockaway”, and so they began to call it The Rockaways.

It wasn’t until the 1800s that this area was seen as a popular place to relax and vacation, and resort hotels and vacation amenities began to build structures here. Affluent residents of nearby cities such as Manhattan purchased summer homes here, and many locals traveled here to “get away” from the hustle and bustle of city life. This still holds true today, and this is also the reason why many families call The Rockaways home. Blue skies, ocean air, and sandy beaches make the quality of life here fairly high.

Some of the popular local destinations in The Rockaways includes the Rockaway Boardwalk, the Gateway National Recreational Area, and the natural beach areas. Rockaway Boardwalk is a beautiful place to watch the waves, and people watch as well. Benches along the pier allow for picnicking and good old relaxation. During the summer months, the Rockaway Boardwalk gets especially busy with tourists that come from around the city and around the country. The Gateway National Recreational Area is an important preserve in The Rockaways that works to protect the natural environment for locals and visitors to enjoy. It also provides safe and responsible access to fun local recreational activities, like swimming, fishing, hiking, and bird watching.
